Cuckoo Clock Homework

I thought that three weeks in which to do ONE homework assignment would be a great improvement over the weekly grind that was the Make Art That Sells class I did for most of last year. This "easier" class is also by Lilla Rogers and is the MATS Bootcamp.

Somehow the assignments are actually harder! But I finished the first one just now... with just two days to spare. Close one!

The assignment was to design a cell phone case using a cuckoo clock motif. While I was doing my research of real cuckoo clocks, I was so struck by the resemblance between the dangling pine cones... and mummies. My brain went off in the Egyptian direction. I hope this works... at the least, it amused me! I made the sketch during a long meeting at church. When I had sketched out the hieroglyphs, I passed my sketchbook over to my son and raised my eyebrows.

He stared at the glyphs for a minute then said. "its abt tym?"

"Yes," I said. "I thought about using a little ew-bird between the b and the t... but then it would be "ab-oot". And that would make it Canadian-Egyptian!" And we proceeded to snicker loudly.

Is there a word for a linguistic-geek?

Anywhoo... here's the final piece I submitted:

To make sure that it worked on a real phone cover, I went and created one on Zazzle. I think it looks really cool, so I posted it for sale!

  1. Brilliant! So clever and original! I want one. How are those Zazzle cases at protecting a clumsy person's phone? I want style, but I need practical performance given my history with phone-dropping.

    1. They are pretty goo - there's some padding between the plastic case and your device. Of course, if you step on it or drop the screen side onto something sharp... :-)
btw - the cases are on sale right now! )

  5. Your work always excites me, but this time I'm more impressed with your decision to upload to dazzle before submitting the homework. You obviously learned a whole lot from that class you took last year about selling your work. That's the kind of smart thinking that most of us lack. And I just want to add that the walking Egyptian and the way the mummy on the right has his arms folded really made me smile.

    1. Thanks. :-)
"Smart thinking" comes from making tons and TONS of bad mistakes. Just so you know. :-)

  7. My understanding is that you already have good publishing contacts. Consider expanding what you do in terms of illustrated books away from art tutorials and into other areas. Perhaps putting out illustrated meditative books could be a good idea with the idea that each book would have a goal in mind, such as perhaps increased friendship, love, money (hey hey hey), artistic success, professional success. I'm actually toying with this concept myself, although more from the writer viewpoint. As an aside note, I'm very impressed with www.Vimeo.com, a video hosting site due to my own exploration and soul-searching needs. There is a tutorial on there related to Vidblogs which conceptually hits all of my marks, plus a section on the site where people post their Vidblogs.

  12. LOVE the phone case! I got it on Monday. Kind of afraid to take my iPhone out of the Otter box, but sometimes a girl just has to have a little style! (Big style in a little case) I love all your creations!
